Biocontrol  Contact  UK: 0845 680 0971 USA: 804 827 3010
Biocontrol is working to develop safe, specific, effective and adaptable biological agents, targeted at markets where current chemical drugs are failing or ineffective.
Evaluation of multiple potential product areas has been undertaken using grant and seed funding, which has resulted in mutiple potential product development streams.
Biocontrol's lead product is based on 15 years of research on bacteriophage-based control of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.
This has allowed the company to reach clinical trials both rapidly and economically.
The company has built on this to develop a world leading position in the application of bacteriophage technology to the control of human disease.
The company has now completed initial clinical trials of its lead product. This is a treatment based on the use of bacteriophages- naturally occurring agents that specifically target and destroy infecting bacteria.

Biocontrol's clinical trials success reported in New Scientist.    23 April 2009

In an article in New Scientist, 22nd April 2009, Catherine de Lange reported that "A virus that gobbles up the bacteria that cause debilitating ear infections could become the next weapon against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, after the first clinical trial of a bacteriophage treatment proved successful ... a single dose of Biophage-PA, which contains a virus that selectively attacks P. aeruginosa, has successfully treated long-term sufferers of antibiotic-resistant ear infections."

Biocontrol trial results cited in "Popular Science" magazine.    03 April 2009

An article by Elizabeth Svoboda on bacteriophage therapy in the  April edition of  Popular Science noted that: "British biotech firm Biocontrol wrapped up the first Phase II clinical trial of phages in Western Europe last year with dramatic results. Its phage regimen combats the Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterium, which causes serious lung and ear infections and is highly resistant to antibiotics.
Patients with antibiotic-resistant infections who received phage therapy experienced a 50 percent reduction in their symptoms, compared with only a 20 percent decrease in the group that did not receive phages. "Frankly, I was blown away," says Dan Nelson, a biochemist at the University of Maryland who was at the conference where Biocontrol unveiled its results."
