Biocontrol announces start of first clinical trial

Biocontrol today announced the first treatment of a patient in its double-blind, placebo controlled phase1/2 clinical trial targeting ear infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The trial uses a single dose of a mixture of six bacteriophages and is under way at a specialist hospital in Central London. The trial is intended to enroll 40 patients.

This is the first trial of the effectiveness of a bacteriophage-based therapeutic to be conducted to modern regulatory standards. The start of this trial represents a landmark in the development of this approach.
